Reddit darktable review6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know why anyone would have trouble getting used to it since it uses sliders just like any other raw processor. It's responsive and highly customizable you can disable modules you don't use and you can use a mask on almost all the modules. I prefer to use open source software anyway so I wouldn't use Lightroom even if it were free.ĭarktable is stable and won't crash unless you run out of RAM when exporting which won't happen under normal use with normal sized images. I've never used Lightroom, but after seeing how much everyone complains about how slow it is among other things I have no intention of ever using it. But I can't say whether you'll like it, that's really up to you. I love Darktable! I think it's one of the best pieces of software out there. They will force you to learn, whereas with Lightroom it is easy to fall into a trap of "doing what the pros are doing" without ever considering whether that's your style or not. I'd wager that the somewhat more "clumsy" tools in Darktable will ultimately force you to consider consciously whether you like their effect or not. There are advantages and disadvantages either way, and it's a long climb either way. But you'll have to climb that learning curve either way, and it's really your choice whether you climb into Adobe's golden cage, or Darktable. Some things it can do better, some things it can't do as well. They are meant to be *powerful*.Ĭapable? You didn't ask for it, but that's kind of the thing: It can do most of the same things Lightroom can. But it's no Capture One (heresay).Įasy to get used to? Hell, no. Responsive? Fast enough for what I'm doing. It worked fine for me back when I was on macOS.
